The Witcher will return to our screens for its second season in December and will see Geralt and Ciri travel to the Witcher keep of Kaer Morhen. The date was announced during WitcherCon in July and puts the second season two years after the first one, which was released in December 2019.
The Witcher hit by pandemic delays
The Witcher production team, like many other TV and film productions, was hit by delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Production in London was halted in November 2020 after several people involved in the series tested positive for Covid-19. Just a month later season two production came to another stop as star Henry Cavill sustained an injury on set. Production finally wrapped in April.
What can we expect from season 2?
Season 1 of The Witcher propelled us into a complex world of politics and magic spanning 40 years. The story was told by way of separate narratives and timelines as we got origin stories of the main characters. Eventually, their timelines converged into one in the season finale.
Season 2 will follow Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, who seeks to bring Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.
Netflix released the full two-minute teaser trailer for The Witcher season 2 in July, as part of the WitcherCon event. Watch it below.
Several popular Witcher characters will join the cast in season 2. Kristofer Hivju who played Tormund Giantsbane in Game of Thrones joins the cast playing Nivellin.
Geralt’s grizzled old father figure Vesemir will make an appearance, played by Kim Bodnia. He’s the oldest and wisest living Witcher in the world as well as being the man who raised Geralt at Kaer Morhen from a young age, he made Geralt the Witcher he is today.
