Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker is the Doctor

5 January, 2019 by PashaO

When it was announced that Jodie Whittaker would be playing the Doctor in Doctor Who, there was a mixed reaction from fans. Some were excited to see a woman take on the role, while others were angry that the Doctor could no longer be portrayed as a man.

Some of the backlash was due to the fact that Whittaker is not a well-known actor, and some fans felt that the BBC had chosen her simply to appease feminists. Others were unhappy that Peter Capaldi, who played the Doctor for three seasons, was not given the chance to continue in the role.

However, many people have since come around to the idea of Whittaker playing the Doctor, and she has received largely positive reviews from critics about series 11. Of course, there are still some who are not happy with the casting decision and have vowed never to watch the series again. Their loss really. Better to not watch than to hate-watch and complain about it on social media, an extreme sport that has blossomed in the past few years.

As for me personally, aside from Arachnids in the UK which I thought was a bit rubbish (no fault of the actors), the stories being told seem to fit with the new Doctor. However, I do hope they don’t spend all of Jodie’s time as the Doctor retelling historical tales. I feel the writers have been a little heavy-handed in some stories.

Many people have praised the telling of Rosa Park’s stand against the Alabama bus network, I didn’t like the idea of this idiot racist from the future going back in time to change things. Neither did I like the Doctor having to stand back and let events unfold. I wouldn’t have liked it if the Doctor had done something different. A lot of historical tales come with a no-win situation so let’s have fewer of them.

Eleven is my favourite Doctor and Thirteen does seem to have some of Eleven’s mannerisms which is probably why I find myself warming to her more.

Doctor Who is one of the most popular shows on BBC, and I think it will continue to be a success with Whittaker at the helm.

What do you think? Did the BBC make the right decision in casting Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor? Let us know in the comments below.
