Sam Carter to join Stargate Atlantis team

28 September, 2007 by PashaO
Stargate Atlantis, Mckay and Carter

It’s been reported that Stargate SG1’s Sam Carter (Amanda Tapping) will join the Stargate Atlantis team essentially replacing Doctor Weir (Torri Higginson).

Whilst I was amused by the Carter/McKay dynamic in Stargate SG1 48 Hours, I’ve come a long way since. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) interact with a scientist who is as clever as he is but who’s smart enough not to brag about it: namely Radek Zelenka played by the wonderful David Nykl.

The relationship between McKay and Zelenka is energising and has grown over the last 3 years. The petty bickering has changed into a mutual admiration where the two now finish each other’s sentences.  It’s great to watch them do this. No one else knows what they are talking about but you can rest assured that whatever they are concocting will likely save the day.

The news that Amanda Tapping is to move over to the SGA universe is quite disturbing. Amanda will be in 14 episodes of season four’s 20 episode run. Don’t’ get me wrong: I love Amanda Tapping and Sam Carter; she was one of SG1’s finest. I just don’t think she belongs in the Pegasus galaxy certainly not permanently and not as a replacement for Dr Weir.

I can imagine she would bring a different spin to the role of leader of the expedition however, I feel a bit cheated as we have already lost Carson, and to lose Elizabeth Weir as well is too much too soon.

I don’t know if ratings are behind the decision to bring Amanda into the show but I think a lot of fans will be disappointed at the choice, maybe some will stop watching (I hope they don’t). Personally, I will continue to watch SGA but I’m not a happy bunny.
