The importance of LGBTQ+ representation on television

14 November, 2021 by PashaO
""

There has been a recent surge in television shows and films that include gay and transgender characters. Shows like Star Trek Discovery, Batwoman, 4400, Black Lightning and Nancy Drew are breaking new ground by including queer characters that are not solely defined by their sexuality or gender identity. This is a major step forward in terms of queer representation, as these characters are given the same level of complexity and development as heterosexual or cisgender characters.

One of the best things about including queer characters in television shows and films is that it allows for audiences to see themselves reflected onscreen. This is particularly important for transgender and nonbinary audiences, who often do not see themselves represented in the media. By having more diverse representations of queerness onscreen, we can help to break down the barriers that prevent people from accepting and understanding LGBTQ+ people.

Queer characters can also help to teach audiences about different aspects of queer life. For example, a character who is coming out as gay may help audiences to understand the process of coming out and the challenges that LGBTQ+ people face. Queer characters can also challenge harmful stereotypes and myths about queerness.

Writers and showrunners may be accused of being woke and feeding into an agenda from a small vocal minority who can safely be ignored for their ignorance. Queer people exist and their stories should be told.

Overall, including queer characters in television shows and films is a great way to break down barriers and educate audiences about the LGBTQ+ community. Queer characters can be both entertaining and educational, and they are sure to inspire more change in the television and film industry.
