British actor, director, and producer Noel Clarke has been suspended by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in light of a series of serious misconduct allegations. These allegations were brought to light in an exposé by The Guardian, which features testimonials from over 20 women who have worked with Clarke. The allegations range from inappropriate touching to unwanted sexual images and even secretly filming an actress naked during an audition. Clarke has firmly denied these allegations.
The news of Clarke’s suspension came as a shock to the British entertainment industry. Clarke, who has always been seen as a fiery personality, has been applauded throughout his career for his commitment to increasing diversity and representation in the industry. His credits include “Kidulthood”, the popular series “Bulletproof”, “Doctor Who“, and most recently the ITV drama “Viewpoint”. He also co-owns the All3Media-backed production banner Unstoppable Entertainment with Jason Maza.
The Guardian article includes on-the-record testimonies from Gina Powell, who worked as a producer for Clarke for three years, and actress Jahannah James, who appeared in the film “Brotherhood”, directed by and starring Clarke.
BAFTA’s Decision
BAFTA has decided to suspend Clarke’s membership and Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award immediately and until further notice. This decision is particularly significant as just two weeks ago, Clarke was the recipient of this prestigious award. The Guardian investigation revealed that BAFTA was aware of the allegations against Clarke before giving him the award but decided to proceed despite the prospect of the article being published.
Clarke’s Response
In response to the allegations, Clarke stated, “In a 20-year career, I have put inclusivity and diversity at the forefront of my work and never had a complaint made against me. If anyone who has worked with me has ever felt uncomfortable or disrespected, I sincerely apologise. I vehemently deny any sexual misconduct or wrongdoing and intend to defend myself against these false allegations.”
Further developments
Following the release of the allegations, All3Media, which backs Clarke’s production company Unstoppable Film and Television, has launched an investigation into the allegations. Additionally, the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Clarke’s US managers Industry Entertainment and UK managers 42 have decided to drop the actor and producer.
