The science-fiction world of Star Trek often draws parallels to our own reality, prompting viewers to contemplate and question their comprehension of society’s structures. One such parallel can be found between the notorious Borg collective from Star Trek and real-world fascist regimes that sought to suppress individuality in favour of one totalitarian rule. As Star Trek: Voyager has decided to lay claim to the Borg as the series’ main protagonist, I thought it would be interesting to compare the Borg collective’s suppression of individuality and how fascist states have historically treated people as mere drones to serve their agenda.
The Borg Collective: Assimilation and erasure of individuality
The Borg collective is an entity that strikes fear into the hearts of those who encounter it. Comprising countless humanoid species forcibly assimilated into the hive mind, the Borg strives for perfection by absorbing distinct species’ intelligence, skills, and technology. To achieve this, they remove individual members’ free will and personal identities, leaving them devoid of life’s very essence – individuality.
When a person is assimilated into the Borg collective, their loyalties lie exclusively with the hive mind. They no longer address others using personal pronouns such as “I” or “you,” but instead refer to themselves collectively as “we.” This extinction of singular self-affirmation exemplifies the loss of everything that once made them unique individuals.
Fascism: Suppressing individuality through totalitarianism
Fascist states like Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy aimed to create a new world order through unyielding control over citizens’ lives. They strived to create a monolithic identity for an entire population by instilling blind loyalty towards a single leader or cause. As with the Borg collective, fascist regimes depersonalised their citizens, hoping they would serve as cogs in the state’s totalitarian machine.
In a fascist state, dissent is brutally suppressed, extinguishing any semblance of individual thought. Free speech and artistic expression are limited to promote the state’s propaganda machine, thereby eliminating opposing ideologies. Fascist governments demand the utmost loyalty from their citizens, indoctrinating them in unquestioning obedience to the regime and its leader.
The parallels: Social suppression for a singular purpose
The main similarity between Star Trek’s Borg collective and real-world fascist regimes is their relentless pursuit of a singular vision at the expense of individuality. Both entities place a higher value on conformity rather than nurturing unique thoughts or personal identities. Subsequently, they rob people of their capacity to think, decide, and act independently.
Final thoughts
While it may be unsettling to draw comparisons between a fictional group like the Borg and real-life fascist states, it serves as a stark reminder that such totalitarian systems can pose an existential threat to our own society’s values. By exploring these similarities, we gain greater insight into how dangerous concepts like fascism seek to suppress individuality to accomplish their twisted objectives. It also highlights how important it is to uphold our democratic values and protect individuals’ rights as essential tenets of a free society.
