Now that the world and his wife are facing the challenges of working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people are finding different ways to communicate as Skype isn’t for everyone.
For the past week, everyone has been going on about Zoom so it came as no surprise when my boss announced that we should give it a go. As someone who embraces technology whilst simultaneously looking for the other shoe, instead of waiting for it to drop, I soon discovered Zoom’s security flaws.
One of my biggest concerns outside of having meetings hijacked is the ability for people in the meeting to record and save the meetings. I was sent a video of a lady named Jennifer who forgot she was on camera and went to the loo during a meeting. We should never have heard about this but obviously, someone in that meeting thought it would be funny to share the video.
Despite the misgivings, we ended up having our first Zoom meeting today. After kicking back in t-shirts and sweats for the past few weeks, I actually had to get dressed up for work today. When I say dressed up, I mean doing my hair and putting on a decent top. It felt strange even though it’s been less than a month since I was last in the office.
I’m having to relearn how to be focused and look like everything everyone is saying is super interesting. I also now have to stay in my seat, no more wondering off to put the kettle on.
All in all, I found my first Zoom experience to be quite refreshing. Everything was easy to set up even for non-tech savvy team members. That’s an important first impression for software.
