BBC has released a trailer for Doctor Who’s Easter special Legend of the Sea Devils. As the title suggests, the episode sees the return of Sea Devils after their last appearance in 1984’s “Warriors of the Deep”.
The episode will air on 17 April and will be Jodie Whittaker’s penultimate Doctor Who episode.
The Doctor and her companions – Yaz, played by Mandip Gill and Dan, played by John Bishop – will face off against the titular monsters. They will also come up against a fearsome pirate queen named Madame Ching (Crystal Yu) in 19th century China.
In an interview in Doctor Who Magazine 576, showrunner Chris Chibnall said the plot of Legend of the Sea Devils, involves lost treasure.
“In our story, Madam Ching is on a mission to track down the lost treasure of the Flor de la Mar, a ship that may have been washed up in the waters around the area where we start the story. She unleashes a terrifying evil that the Doctor has to help everyone deal with.”

The trailer doesn’t reveal much, but it does give the impression that we are in for an epic swashbuckling adventure. The episode will be a standalone adventure, as confirmed by director Haolu Wang in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine.
“This is very much an adventure episode,” she explained, per Radio Times. “Because Jodie is regenerating in the next episode, this is her last chance to have a bit of fun with the gang. But it’s done in a way that we maybe haven’t seen on Doctor Who before. It’s quite epic, but also very emotional.”
This autumn, the Thirteenth Doctor will bow out in a BBC centenary special alongside showrunner Chris Chibnall. Companions Yaz and Dan will also be leaving the show making way for a new Doctor and companion or companions.
